In 1994, Johnny Cash had begun the “American Recordings” series with Rick Rubin. Vol. 1 was followed two years later by Vol. 2 “Unchained”. With “American Recordings III – Solitary Man”, Johnny Cash, who was already seriously ill, presented another stroke of genius, a true folk masterpiece.F. Schöler in Stereo 12/00: “He interprets the originals of Nick Cave, Tom Petty, Will Oldham and others so “privately” and artistically credible that one may marvel at how completely he appropriated them. Strictly speaking, he doesn’t interpret them, but invents them – a miracle is the title song by Neil Diamond! – actually- actually completely new.”
